Alongside my passion for teaching and education, I have also had a passion for playing the cello. My grandparents had one in the corner of their living room as decor and I was always told not to touch it. It’s safe to say, as a six-year-old, I did not listen and now almost fifteen years later I still consider it to be one of my strongest passions. I started playing in the Capriccio division of the Richmond Delta Youth Orchestra in 2010 and worked my way to the top in the Symphony division, earning the position of Principal Cellist in 2020. In grade 12 I wanted to follow in my moms footsteps and study music at UBC and really worked hard towards that goal, practicing up to 30 hours a week. I had my audition in March 2020 and ended up having a panic attack on stage so unfortunately I didn’t make it into the program and my passion for it sort of died out. I’m hoping to maybe rekindle that passion and start playing again. My cello is still at home on the mainland so I have to figure out a way to get it over here, but once it is, everything should be smooth sailing. I’ve put a link below to one of the pieces I played during my audition for UBC. It’s the Prelude from J.S Bach’s Suite 3 and was really tough because of all the technical aspects to it, which is evident in some of my mistakes, but it’s just to use as a reference (also mind my facial expressions, I had to play the whole thing from memory so I guess i figured I could see the music on the back of my eyelids or something).
